Hot Tub Parts ExplainedThis section explains technical and functional operations of Hot Tubs with explanations of major Hot Tub Parts (Spa Parts / Hot Tub Spares). Hot Tub major parts include: Shell, Frame, Cabinet, Hot Tub Pump, Jets, Hot Tub Heater, Control Panel, and Filters. Correct care and maintenance of your spa prolongs its life and enhances your enjoyment. Today's spas fall into three categories:
(1) Hard Acrylic Shell Spas SHELL: The hot tub surface is a tough, weather and chemical resistant thermoplastic, usually acrylic. On its own the acrylic isn't thick enough or strong enough, but fibreglass backing provides the necessary re-inforcement and strength to withstand the weight of the equipment, water and bathers. The shell is a tightly integrated part of the hot tub, making it impractical to replace a complete shell. However, shell repairs are possible for cracks and localised damage. Repairs like this are more suited to professional spa service companies rather than the DIY enthusiasts because 2-part resins are required followed by finishing and polishing. FRAME: The acrylic shell requires support from a frame; sometimes metal, but more commonly wood. The frame holds the shell in the correct position and provides strength and support. It also provides fixing points for the Cabinet or Skirt. CABINET: Originally spa cabinets were exclusively made from wood, but weather deterioration and family wear-and-tear meant that damage was common and annual wood-preservation treatment was required. More than ever today hot tub cabinets are manufactured from polymer plastics and other materials that do not weather and are note prone to damage, making them far more practical and durable. COVER: Hot Tub covers are usually constructed from vinyl covered foam, tapered to allow water drain-off. For inground installations, or for areas where safety is a primary concern, metal hot tub covers are available. PUMPS: A hot tub has one or more pumps that circulate the water. Large volumes of water are pushed through tiny jet nozzles to create high pressure water streams. Take a look at our section on Hot Tub Pumps for further information. JETS: Water streams alone do not create energetic hydrotherapy massage. Air is mixed with the water, using a venturi action, to create bubbles that invigorate the jet stream and provide hydrotherapy massage, delivered by different jet configurations to provide a variety of jetting actions. Take a look at out section on Jets for further information. HEATER: An electric heater element (like a kettle element) is fitted inside a tube. Water passes through the tube and is heated as it passes. The heated water is circulated around the spa, kept at set temperature by the control system. Take a look at out section on Hot Tub Heaters for further information. CONTROL SYSTEM: There is a waterproof topside control panel fitted into the top edge of the shell. It has touch buttons that operate the functions of the spa. The panel gives control over the set water temperature, pumps, filtration cycles and lighting. The panel is connected to the spa's control pack - the 'brain' of the hot tub. SANITATION: Correct sanitation is essential to ensure safety and comfort. The hot tub filter and filtration system play a role in keeping the water clean and clear, as do the chemicals and the Ozonator. Take a look at out section on Filters for further information. |
